Reflections On A Rainy Day

Today, I woke up to heavy rain and wind. It was raining so hard I could barely see the neighbors house across the street.

Later I wandered quietly back to my desk,  savoring the warm comfort of my office. My quiet little world where I can dream, write and create.

A brief interlude~ a respite from the heavy rain that had been falling all morning.

Standing in a place where land and sky meet ~ Capturing reflections , clouds winging past, moments, wind and more rain. . .

A perfect lunch for a day like this  . . .

“Soup is the song of the hearth…  and the home.” ~ Louis P. De Gouy

The ever-changing play of darkness and light ~  Dark clouds hang above our head. The storm in all it’s fierceness is still beautiful, poetic, and lyrical as winter gives way to spring.

“Last night the rain spoke to me
slowly, saying, what joy
to come falling out of the brisk cloud,
to be happy again in a new way
on the earth!” ~ Mary Oliver

Happy New Year ~ 2011

As one year comes to a close and another year begins ~  the doorway swings open for new opportunities, new adventures and growth.

The New Year is the time of the year when we clean and bless our homes ~ sweeping out the old or unwanted energy by smudging or burning incense and lighting a candle to bless our home, our family and friends.

It’s also a time to turn inward, to deepen, to slow down, to nurture the seeds of hope and tend the garden of peace within our hearts and the world.

~ Ask yourself what you would most like to create this year?

~ What deepest part of yourself would you like to forgive and heal or nurture?

~ What can you do to create change in your life and your community?

You are like a candle.
Imagine you are sending light out all around you.
All your words, thoughts and actions
are going in many directions.
If you say something kind,
your kind words go in many directions,
and you yourself go with them.
We are …transforming and continuing
in a different form at every moment.
~ Thich Nhat Hanh

Sweet Memories

During the holiday season I enjoy pulling out Christmas decorations and puttering around deciding which ornaments to put on the tree. Stacks of boxes filled with all kinds of treasures tucked safely away waiting ~  angels, fairies, story dolls, tinsel, golden bells, red apples and homemade felt doves. Over the years I have received ornaments from family and friends and I cherish the sweet memories and joy they awaken in my heart as I unwrap each precious one and hang it on the tree.

Yesterday evening we decorated our home and balcony for the holidays. I made fudge brownies and steaming hot chocolate to keep us warm as we hung lights outside in the rain. It was really chilly outside and we were bundled up like Eskimos trying to wrap lights around the railing.  Laughing ~ talking ~ drinking chocolate and enjoying the peacefulness of home.

“Happy, happy Christmas, that can win us back to the delusions of our childish days; that can recall to the old man the pleasures of his youth; that can transport the sailor and the traveller, thousands of miles away, back to his own fire-side and his quiet home!” ~ Charles Dickens

Here is one of my favorite songs by Loreena McKennitt ~ hauntingly beautiful.

Art & Joy

Things I did Today …

Created some lovely new pieces of jewelry for the Holidays.

After playing around with some new designs for bangle bracelets. I found some kyanite beads in my bead drawer and became completely mesmerized by their beauty. I layed out some freshwater pearl strands, two toned Czech glass beads and copper wire and let creativity flow through me like a river.

When creating, I find I become more centered in the process and more attentive to my inner voice as my work merges and changes from one thing into another. I admit some days are better than others regardless of the outcome, I always feel more alive, more joyful, more aware and more complete.

thought for the day; “The Artist is a receptacle for emotions that come from all over the place. From the sky, from the earth, from a scrap of paper, from a passing shape, from a spiders web….” ~ Pablo Picasso

Rain ~ Mind ~ Spirit

Today, the rain washed  over me ~ washed me clean ~ refreshing my mind and spirit.

A light misty rain all day with heavy clouds so near I could reach up and touch them ~ There were brief moments when the sun tried to break through, but the sky quickly swallowed it up again. Sigh … It was definitely a two pot of coffee kind of day!

Earlier, I took a photo of this huge bramble bush near our home and wondered how many small creatures make their home there, in the dense, thick, tangle of brambles! A reminder that I need only to look ~ to find enchantment.

Watching ~ Reflecting ~ Observing how the changing seasons flow over and through me ~The spiral turns once again ~ And as always, I find that nature is my  guide and ultimate teacher.

GREETING

Over the wave-patterned sea floor,
Over the long sun-burnt ridge of the world,
I bid the winds seek you
I bid them cry to you
Night and morning
A name you loved once;
I bid them bring to you
Reed songs, and songs of the small birds –
and sleep.

~ Ella Young (1867 – 1956)
