Gifts From Nature

I found these small gifts tucked safely away in my coat pocket ~ Gift’s from earth, sky and sea. A feather caught in my hair on one of my walks ~An Oak leaf with a tiny acorn from a favorite tree and a small treasure from my last visit to the ocean.

Later, as I was cleaning out an antique chest of drawers , I decided to try and find some information on the unusual drawer pulls. The only info I found was very limited. ~  Sigh . .

Aunt Margie purchased it at a garage sale in New York  in the early 40’s. Apparently, it had been painted over with several layers of bright green paint. Imagine her surprise to find cherry wood underneath all that paint.

Over the years, this old chest has become like an old friend with it’s worn edges and Victorian Green Man faces staring out from each drawer like little guardians protecting hidden treasures tucked away inside.  Such beauty & craftsmanship!

Autumn ~ So Peaceful ~ Mother Nature ~ Winding Down ~ A touch of frost in the air.

Before I go,  here is a sweet little video I found on You tube.

Autumn, and the lure of the season. A dance film working around poetry.

October Days

“Come said the wind to
the leaves one day,
Come o’re the meadows
and we will play.
Put on your dresses
scarlet and gold,
For summer is gone
and the days grow cold.”

Rain ~ Mind ~ Spirit

Today, the rain washed  over me ~ washed me clean ~ refreshing my mind and spirit.

A light misty rain all day with heavy clouds so near I could reach up and touch them ~ There were brief moments when the sun tried to break through, but the sky quickly swallowed it up again. Sigh … It was definitely a two pot of coffee kind of day!

Earlier, I took a photo of this huge bramble bush near our home and wondered how many small creatures make their home there, in the dense, thick, tangle of brambles! A reminder that I need only to look ~ to find enchantment.

Watching ~ Reflecting ~ Observing how the changing seasons flow over and through me ~The spiral turns once again ~ And as always, I find that nature is my  guide and ultimate teacher.

GREETING

Over the wave-patterned sea floor,
Over the long sun-burnt ridge of the world,
I bid the winds seek you
I bid them cry to you
Night and morning
A name you loved once;
I bid them bring to you
Reed songs, and songs of the small birds –
and sleep.

The Road Less Traveled

Earlier today, when I went for a walk this is what I saw, a grassy path leading off into the distance. A path covered in dry leaves, dead tree limbs and autumn brush.

I had no idea the road I had chosen to explore this morning would offer up so many wonderful surprises. As I stood in silence watching the colors shift and change over the landscape, the sun moved slowly overhead creating shadow and light. Such beauty!

Several hours later, as I sit here at my desk before the window and type, edit, ponder and muse. The sun is slowly sinking in the west. It is time to close the windows and draw the blinds. To light candles and reflect on the day … turn inward, and snuggle deep into my favorite chair with a book. xo

thought for the day;

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I–
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference

Reflections & Rain

Raindrops  dripping from branches overhead and reflections at my feet.

Walking in the rain is one of my favorite things to do during this season.  ~ breathing in fresh air ~ beautiful, evocative and ethereal. So magical, these sparkling raindrops falling from the sky!

I relish the time to  just sit quietly, to gather my thoughts, to read, drink my tea and watch the falling, falling rain.

thought for the day;

“It is time for us to kiss the earth again,
It is time to let the leaves rain from the skies,
Let the rich life run to the roots again.”
~ Robinson Jeffers

Every Leaf Has a Story

Every autumn leaf has a story~ a message from Gaia ~  sweet prayers falling from the trees.

Gaia knows it’s history, it’s story, it’s beauty, it’s individual veins and ragged edges.

thought for the day;

A season of such beauty,
Nature’s artistry unfolds,
The foliage all around us,
Reds, crimsons, even golds.

The air is fresh and crisp,
Winter snow hovers near,
Autumn leaves in brilliant beauty,
Add their notes of festive cheer.

A vibrant canopy of leaves,
Offers shelter from the sun,
Until a rising evening breeze,
Sends them flying, one by one.

By morning and the falling rain,
The lovely leaves are no more,
They have fallen from the trees,
And lay on the forest floor.
